Why I Do This Work

"I have been the engineer struggling to explain technical risks to leadership — and I have been the leader tasked with making decisions based on dense, technical reports."

I once sat in a regulatory hearing listening to "expert witnesses" being questioned by a lawyer who either wasn't prepared at all, or had angered their technical support staff — because nothing they asked made any sense. Yet this was the data the regulator would use to make a decision. We all know bad data results in bad decisions, but I'm also frustratingly aware of how frequently good data goes underutilized.

I've seen firsthand the cost of the "Communication Gap": delayed decisions that lead to equipment failure, safety incidents, and organizational frustration. My career — spanning provincial safety management at Technical Safety BC to standards and integrity engineering at ATCO Gas — has been defined by one mission: navigating the relationship between technical complexity and business impact.

While pursuing my CPA designation, I realized that the most successful organizations don't just have the best data — they have the best anchors. They use their vision and mission to navigate the noise of modern data and make tough decisions with confidence. Difficult decisions aren't difficult because the options are equally beneficial; they're difficult because the grading matrix isn't clear. Companies create long, detailed annual business plans — but is it ever really clear how those plans guide decision-making for specific issues?

I'm tired of sitting through training sessions telling me to use layperson terms, be more concise, speak with confidence, and use more pictures on slides. That stuff helps — but it doesn't solve the real problem. So I had to figure it out on my own.

I created a leadership style and methodology that worked for me. Then I enrolled in the UBC Organizational Coaching program to combine my technical experience with a human-centric framework. Now I don't just teach "soft skills" — I provide a structured protocol, The Impact-Focused Method, to ensure technical expertise is heard and executive priorities are met.

My goal is to make the world a safer, more efficient place. When we bridge the gap, we don't just save time — we build sustainable leadership habits that foster independence, confidence, and better decisions at every level.
